Launching the Hawea Vercoe Leadership Programme

We recently launched our 2017 Hawea Verco Leadership Programme at our Te Tai Tokerau Leadership Summit, held at Waitangi during Matariki.  We have expanded our programme, which had an initial intake of 10 rangatahi, to provide opportunities for 20 rangatahi from Northland who aspire to be leaders in their communities.

We are privileged to have a high calibre of Matua (distinguished leaders) from different sectors including health, education, performing arts, business and enterprise, mentoring our tuakana and teina mentees.  Some of our Matua are actor Cliff Curtis, designer Kiri Nathan and CEO of Te Tumu Paeroa, Jamie Tuuta.

Our Hawea Vercoe Leadership Programme is the brainchild of Dr Lance O’Sullivan, targeted to rangatahi Māori aged 12 to 24 years.  The programme is 12 months in duration and connects Mentees and Mentors with a Matua with an aim to strengthening future Māori leaders and prosperity at all levels.  Each mentee will have the opportunity to attend events, workshops and conferences throughout the year, as well as receive practical support to assist with their transition to future career pathways.

Some of our success stories from this programme include local rangatahi Ezekiel Raui, Conor O'Sullivan and Cale Silich.
